100% Fret Free Records is an offshoot of FRET LESS Music, an artist-run promotion company for musicians. First release is a five band compilation called "Go On Girl," which features female-fronted bands from NYC and Texas. The NYC bands are Amanda's Waiting, Broken Sky and Gate 18. The Texas bands are Velvet Hammer and Psalm 69. Hope to put out femle-fronted band compilations twice a year. A-Scale releases and sells albums by the artists Eyeless In Gaza and Martyn Bates. For latest information on these artists and what their albums sounds like -- visit their homepages. Eyeless In Gaza have been important for many other "indie" bands and was one of the biggest in the beginning of the 80ies.

Recently ressurected, Ace Of Hearts was the premiere Boston label in the early to mid 80's - Mission Of Burma, The Lyres, The Neats. The back catalog is great (even though all the Burma stuff went to Taang and Ryko) but their recent releases are a bit weak in comparison.

Ace Records specialises in re-issues, from R&b to psychedelia, via jazz, soul, funk, rock'n'roll, world music - ooh, loads of stuff.

Ajax has been many things to date, but it's currently the re-release headquarters for the Jefferies brothers, Peter and Graeme. The label's own releases are generally good but hard to classify, but the distribution/mail-order side of things is the real key to Ajax' popularity. Up to #16, one of the consistently best mail-order catalogs in the US and probably the world, with lots of New Zealand imports to keep the masses happy. Catalog is free for the asking, but send Tim a couple stamps or something - make his life a little easier. Unfortunately, a catalog is not available on-line; perhaps in the future.

AAJ is a co-op label of Tallahassee bands. They have combined resources for college radio mailouts, press and touring information. The label has put out approximately 20 releases, including 15 7-inches and 3 cd's. The styles of music range from low-fi to punk to indie-pop and ecletic rock. Bands currently on their roster include Flanders, Nel Aspinal, Bacon Ray, Kenny Howes, Frankenfinger, Bottlensose and Invaders from a Forbidden Planet. They have a catalog available and will be releasing a compilation cd for Fall of 1996.

A recent series of singles called "Emergency Broadcast Systems" has been great, as have earlier comps and singles featuring Fiddlehead, Phleg Camp, and Fuel.

AlternaKids is certainly a well placed indie in the thriving Chapel Hill area, but not quite another Merge, at least it wouldn't appear so. The label specialises in alternative music for kids, rather than the stuff that gets churned out by dinosaurs, of the purple variety I guess. I haven't heard anything but with the Uncle John and Mikey cassette (reviewed by IMRS) with songs called `Hardley a Clown in the Sky' and `I wanna Iguana' this has just got to be ace!

Founded by Jello Biafra, AT has had problems finding worthwhile bands of late but anyone with that kind of a back catalog (all the DK's stuff, for example) is going to do just fine. But, this label really seems to be working hard to establish itself as the worst indie-label in America at the present moment, though new LPs from Neurosis and Zeni Geva might be turning it around again.

ASR is a cyber-label, making their music available only on the Internet. We have two bands, ZOAR and Thanks to Gravity. ZOAR is an "ambient/gothic" instrumental band, and TTG is an alternative band with classical influences. The ordering information is on the web site.

Record Label and Mail Order Company in the eastern part of germany. They mainly keep punk and hardcore stuff in store and have released three albums on CD. Two by Dritte Wahl, "Fasching In Bonn" and "Auge um Auge", and one by Dog Food Five, "My Degeneration". Am Rep has succeeded in rebuilding a noisy scene in Minneapolis and elsewhere with its collection of bands - Halo of Flies, Hammerhead, Tar, Surgery, Vertigo, Cosmic Psychos, and more (I realize that most of the named bands aren't from MN, but bear with me...). There is most definitely an AmRep sound - angry, heavy, downtrodden, but don't take my word for it, listen and learn.

Bad Taste is Iceland's only alternative label. It was formed in 1986 by the people that some weeks later formed the supergroup The Sugarcubes. Since then, BT has released 90% of what is good in icelandic music plus weird postcards, books, t-shirts etc. The label runs a mail order service where you can buy BT stuff plus other cool stuff. Also, contrary to the original comments here, "anything" does NOT "go" - instead, the label prides itself on not releasing anything that's merely extreme/weird-for-extremity's/weirdness' sake. Blacklist isn't really a label, but it is one of the best mail-order places in the US, especially for punk/hardcore/emo-core stuff. Good prices, too, from what I remember...

Small label, more on the punk side of Olympia, and sticking to local talent for the most part (Creep, Silkworm, Honeybucket, and a great compilation LP _It's The Water_). I've been really impressed with the quality of the records - one would think that there could be only a certain number of good bands from one region, but more keep turning up.

Blind Pig is a respected independent blues/roots label that has also delved into roots rock, zydeco and gospel. Not only does the label have the best logo in the industry, they have some very popular releases by Buddy Guy & Junior Wells, Jimmy Thackery, Debbie Davies, James Cotton, Charlie Musselwhite, Roy Rogers, Jimmy Rogers, Coco Montoya, and many more. Bloodshot Records is a label that has made its personal crusade to wipe out country music as it's currently defined by Nashville and Vegas. They have released two compilations of new and very talented artists called "For A Life of Sin" and "Hell-Bent Insurgent Country". They also have some full-length's and 7" by Waco Bros., Old 97's and others. This is real music for real people. Even indie rock fans such as myself will find it interesting.

Blow-Up Records is a brand skankin' new cassette-only label out of the Minneapolis suburbs. So far, the current roster is made up of one guy: Bargathon. Bargathon writes songs that are born out of an acoustic guitar, a sheet paper, a voice, and a lot of swearing. New Jersey's contribution to the Shrimper phenomenon. Most of the music on the label has been made by a total of 4 people under a random collection of names - Shoebox Full Of Love, Stampled, Suckflower, Fucking Emmeline, Hey Dave, and Stanley and David. There's also a 7" single now from Stanley and David which is really cool. Fans of early Sebadoh, Refrigerator, Shoeface, and other Shrimper-style noises, take note.

Originally a notable fanzine, BOMP is the first and oldest indie in the U.S. (Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year!) BOMP the label is strictly the unheard, cutting-edge music, from classic punk (Stooges, Dead Boys) to psychedelic, experimental and industrial (Spacemen 3/Distorted Pony/Brian Jonestown Massacre). Home of the Melvins and Steel Pole Bathtub, deals mostly in heavy, grungy music from the West Coast. Superconductor's excellent "Heavy With Puppy" EP is on Boner as well.

Recently-started label in Chicago's burgeoning scene, sports a 7" release by Dingle, and has plans for a two-year "Baker's Dozen" series of singles. The packaging is nice, the music is pretty decent. I may be prejudiced since it's my label, but we eschew the lo-fi aesthetic and go for a very solid, traditional single look (heavy paper jacket, hand-printed). The artists work closely with the label to decide the sound and look of the releases. Concerts around Chicago, --soon the world! No distributors yet, but soon. Real soon.

This is the house label for the zine Jaboni Youth. Hopefully this will change eventually though (ie: the label will get as much or more attention than the zine). Brassland is primarily a cassette label which has put out stuff by obscure home-taper types like Pumpernickel, Jason Morphew, and the Billy Crosbys. Brassland also sells a good number of 7"s and tapes from other labels (such as Shrimper, Walt, and 7" stuff by bands related to Brassland). The most notable release so far is a tape comp with Jaboni Youth #4 which included tracks by Franklin Bruno, Refrigerator, Paste, Six Cents and Natalie, and the Bloody Hawaiians (the Mountain Goats with WCKR SPGT), and many more.

Breakfast Records is an independent label run by members of Orbit, based in Boston, and dedicated to trying to breathe some new life into the Boston music scene. They believe that musical artists will benefit more from working together than working in competition. They don't have much money, but they've got an Internet domain(!).

Singles from Aurora Paralysis, Fudge, and Waking Hours, a double split single of Twitch Hazel (pre-Fudge) and Technical Jed, and a CD comp called "Something Pretty Beautiful" - along the lines of "One Last Kiss" but not as consistent. Hazy, brit-influenced, but not strictly derivative.

This is a tiny label run by Peter S. Larson. The label has thus far been very well focused geographically on the Michigan scene and musically on extremily lo-fi, buzzy avant-noise. The label's flagship band is the unknown Couch. Two of the other bands, Prehensile Monkey-tailed Skink and Cornelius Gomez borrow at least one of the Couch boys, so the whole label has that inbred, small town feeling. The label has been branching out, and the most recent catalogue advertises stuff from Chicago's infamous Punk Jazz monsters, the Flying Luttenbachers, and Math, Chicago's noise-folk primitivists, as well as a Mr. Tatsuya Yoshida(who may be the same person who plays with Japanoise turntable destroyers Gerogerigegege and in the Michigan/Chicago supergroup, Cornelius Gomez).

The newer kids on the block in Seattle - they've done their share of collector records like the Teriyaki Asthma series, but also great releases by Silkworm, Engine Kid, Built To Spill, and Treepeople. Not as much fanfare as S-b P-p, but a marginally better recent track record...

Basically a cassette label, with about 15 releases so far by artists (most of em are prety unknown) by Little Jupiter, Planetseven, Archie, Frogger, Neener, the Potatomen, 7-10 Split, Jersey Tushi, think Apollo, and a few more. Plus a 35+ band compilation with loads of people such as Charlie McAlister, Diskothi-Q, Planetseven, Little Jupiter, Asrielle, New Bad Things, Pie, Creeper Lagoon, Star Popsicle, Edith Presler, etc. And a 7" comp to be out in October with the Mountain Goats, Edith Presler, Milky Wimpshake, Little Jupiter, adn Irving Klaw Trio. One of the premiere noise labels right now, they just did a series of K.K. Null releases, with folks like Jim O'Rourke, Merzbow, and his own band, Zeni Geva. Grating, nerve-wracking, mind-bending - these are all compliments in my book.

Che' (that accents meant to be on the e!) have an increasingly interesting bunch of releases to their credit. They've releases by german indie rockers 18th Dye, Magic Hour (Galaxie 500 offspring!), the Bardots, Slipstream, Fur, Disco Inferno, Animals that Swim and Delta, Bear, the excellent Uresei Yatsura and probably a whole host more. They do mail order and offer a newsletter if you ask to get put on their mailing list, mail order prices are cheap(ish), or so I've been told.

Two demos have been released thus far: The Houseflies demo and the Population70 demo. Run by Mark from Kudgel, I believe, and the Kudgel single is one of the better Cinderlock singles. Nothing much recently, but I'm still looking and hoping for more good stuff from this new crop of Boston bands.

Since the east coast has exploded into a mecca for indie music, this may not be news to you. They've put out singles for bands like Jale (now signed to Sub Pop -skm) and Bubaiskull (Who I believe have changed their name -Steve). And they're really nice people.

Definitly one of the best labels in Germany! Albums by Sebadoh, Hole, Superchunk, Seam, Yo La Tengo, Unsane, Cell have been released since it was founded a couple of years ago. For promotional use only a sampler called "Grunge R.I.P. 1992" was published featuring previously unreleased acoustic versions of Hole, Seam, Superchunk and the excellent "Reject" from Sebadoh. Lucky bastard if you get a copy ! Furthermore there's a sampler "Slanged!" including songs from Hole, Yo La Tengo, Seam, Unsane, Love Child, Superchunk, Big Ray, Cell, Sebadoh, 11th Dream Day. A label-report was broadcasted last year by the german music-tv-station "viva". It's actually my favourite label. Send them candy!

The third memeber of the PLUG coalition (along with Too Pure and Wiiija). 1993 saw them release two of the finest albums of the year in Breed's 'Violent Sentimental' and Gallon Drunk's 'From The Heart of Town'. The slicked back 50's smoke and grime of Gallon Drunk's back catalogue is further complimented by punk upstarts Mambo Taxi ('Dress Like That' being their finest 7" moment). And then there's the Clawfist Singles Club to subscribe to as well, specialising in split singles with one band covering the others songs. A great label.
Clawfist has temporarily hung up it's boots and closed it's doors, which is a real shame because the label released some great records. The singles club will continue for the present so it may still be worth getting in touch.

Cleopatra seems to have a real mixed bag of releases from early punk people like the Adicts, Angelic Upstarts, Anti Nowhere League and Christian Death, as well as stuff from goth definitives Alien Sex Fiend. Most of the stuff seems to be US releases of UK and European based sounds, there are Laibach and Kraftwerk releases. Not so sure there's very much in the way of original artists though. This label hardly seems to be pushing back any barriers with the stuff it's putting out.

The only thing I know about this label is that the most exciting band 18th Dye is signed to them. The label has released the album Done and also the min-album Crayon (both of which are also available on Matador in the states!).

Hover has since disbanded, but Club Fub continues to put out releases, including those of Club Fub owner Brad Searles' new band Starlight Conspiracy. Their cassette was given an excellent review recently by CMJ. Club Fub has also put out a series of Split Singles with two Burlington VT bands on each release. The last of six featured Rocketsled, Jesus Nut, and the Fags.

Finally back among the living after the move from Georgia, Communion is a solid label which has worked with lots of people from time to time - Bitch Magnet, Jawbreaker, Some Velvet Sidewalk are ones I can remember. Releases are infrequent, but worth tracking down.

Wow. They've released two Illusion Of Safety records and are a great label. Also put out a CD by CheerAccident, a bizarre Chicago band.

Pretty rockin' label: comps featuring Rodan, Crain, Rocket From The Crypt, and Pitchblende, singles from Bull, Uptowne Bones, Zonic Shockum, and Caterpillar. Bryan's a very nice guy, but sorta slack sometimes on the mail-end of things...

Mainstreamy jazz label. Not too bad, but certainly not a Black Saint or Soul Note among contemporary labels and releases.

This UK label specialises in helping new bands/artists release their own material economically and effectively on CD, Vinyl or Cassette. Past releases have been from bands such as Picasso, Brick Supply, Tse-Tse Fly, DNA, Brave New Dawn and many others. One of the leading labels in Britain in the last 5 years - Slowdive, Adorable, Ride, Swervedriver, My Bloody Valentine, early Primal Scream stuff, Biff Bang Pow. Maybe a bit over-hyped, but a solid label on the whole. Still the place to look for what's new in the UK. They are also connected with subsidiaries such as August Records who have Ween, Shonen Knife, Eugenius, and Autohaze. Another is Rev-ola with reissues of O-Level, Leonard Nimoy.

Cool Label Award goes to these guys!! They've got stuff by the Bouncing Souls, Buglite, Brody, 2.5 Children, the Boils, the Halflings, Super Hi 5 and loads more! They only charge like six bucks for a shirt, don't rip anybody off, work really hard and it shows. Trust me, I've been to Arik's house. He has helped me so much with my zine, putting on shows, and a lot of other stuff you wouldn't want to hear about. They also have a recording studio and 16 track and charge like $25 an hour. Definately my favorite indie...

Daron, one of the guys who runs it is a very nice fella, but you shouldn't send him candy.
